Amelia's Run for Koda

Oct 26, 2024 - 8 am - 11 am

Chamber Office - 1858 J H O'Bryan Ave, Grand Rivers

Amelia's Run (formerly known as The Amelia B Wilson LBL Run) for 2024 will feature a 10km, 5km, and Kid's Run. It remains under the direction of Durbin Race Management and is hosted by incredible volunteers from the Grand Rivers area, most of whom knew and loved Amelia Wilson.

The race honors a spectacular woman, Amelia Brown Wilson, who was taken too soon. She was a staple of the Grand Rivers community. The race is being used as a fundraiser for an organization she believed in and worked so hard for: the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA). Amelia was an organ recipient early in life and unfortunately lost her life due to complications later in life (but way too soon at 39 years old). Please see more in the next sections.

Fall running at Land Between the Lakes and Grand Rivers KY is stunningly beautiful. This year's race will feature the same 10km course, a new 5km course, and a Kid's Fun Run!! The Kid's race will be between 1km and 1 mile in length

From Earth to the Universe

Sep 1, 2024 thru Nov 30, 2024 - Various Times

Golden Pond Planetarium - 238 Visitor Center Dr, LBL

This is staff favorite. Very broad in scope, the show begins with some brief history of how we have progressed in our understanding of the universe. In the past one hundred years we have grown exponentially and with the aid of the tech industry we are now able to observe aspects of the universe for the first time. Next, we enjoy a nice trip through the solar system - and beyond. We have lots of enthusiasm for the deep space concepts and many of our visitors and patrons agree. Deep space is infinitely interesting. With stunning visuals and a top-notch narration, it is easy to see why this show quickly became a favorite. Admission fees apply. Golden Pond Planetarium - 238 Visitor Center Dr, LBL

Some of this debris collides with the Earth daily and is harmless. Some of the other objects may also collide with us, but we surely hope not. But we know it has happened before as you will learn in the show. Dedicated nightly searches are carried out around the globe using the most sophisticated instruments and computer software to detect Near Earth Objects (NEOs). A collision with a large comet or asteroid has the potential to destroy an entire civilization and change the course of history. Just ask the dinosaurs. Admission fees apply. Earth, Moon & Sun

Sep 1, 2024 thru Nov 30, 2024 - Various Times

Golden Pond Planetarium - 238 Visitor Center Dr, LBL

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center created Earth, Moon & Sun to help children explore the relationship between our home planet and its most familiar neighbors. Children are helped in their exploration by Coyote, a character adapted from Native American oral traditions. Native American stories woven throughout the show illustrate how we have long sought to understand our planet and the skies above us. In this show, Coyote proves to be an amusing guide because he has so many misconceptions about space. Coyote's confusion brings scientific facts to light and helps students think about how Earth, Moon, and Sun work together as a system. Students learn why the Sun rises and sets and the basics of fusion and solar energy. They examine the Moon's orbit, craters, phases, and eclipses. The show also describes past and future space travel to our Moon and beyond. Admission fees apply. For showtimes, download the full Planetarium schedule here.

Fire has accompanied the Earth since its inception and has played a very important role in the evolution of the human being, so much so that its discovery by primitive societies changed their way of life. Totality

Sep 1, 2024 thru Nov 30, 2024 - Various Times

Golden Pond Planetarium - 238 Visitor Center Dr, LBL

"Totality" is a fascinating look at all the wonders of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses. An eclipse is described simply as when one celestial object blocks another from our view. This program, produced by Bays Mountain Planetarium, examines what eclipses are, how and when they occur, and what wonderful sights they create. We also look back to a fascinating period in scientific discovery when general relativity was proven with the photographic recording of a total solar eclipse. Our production includes a variety of wonderful styles - from spectacular space environments to humorous pop-up books. A very special part of the show relates, in a very human way, what happens when you are caught in the shadow of the Moon and the Sun is plunged into a total solar eclipse. Admission fees apply.
